Building Tip #43: Flooring - Terrazzo, Marble, or Tile?

Building Tip #43: Flooring - Terrazzo, Marble, or Tile?

Consider what flooring you will choose first as it is a vital element which ties an entire room or building together, it's the aspect that will help determine how the space should be used and decorated. Here we discuss three favourite flooring types as well as their pros and cons.

Terrazzo:

Terrazzo flooring adds a beautiful dimension to any room. Terrazzo is created by mixing small pieces of granite in a cement and resin mix, offering a smooth finish to a visually detailed floor. Terrazzo is a highly durable material although it can be chipped if something heavy enough is suddenly dropped on the floor. Terrazzo is expensive to install and will need to be installed by a professional for the best results. It is a very easy-to-clean option for flooring making it a favourite for families with small children and pets and is available in a variety of colours for any type of room.

Marble:

Often regarded as one of the most elegant flooring options available, marble floors are a luxurious flooring option for many homes. Marble has the ability to increase the aesthetic appeal of a home and is naturally available in a variety of single colours and shades and options of mixtures of colours to suit the desired interior design of the room. Marble can also be cut into a wide selection of tile shapes for easier installation. Much like other stone flooring and counter options, marble can be chipped and will need to be replaced, unfortunately it can be difficult to find the correct shade and colour of marble years after installation.

Tile:

Tiled floors offer a wide array of benefits to any room as they are durable, available in a huge selection of designs, colours, and textures, easy to clean and offer a simple yet elegant look and feel. Tiles are also a hygienic flooring choice which requires little maintenance for cleaning and basic care. Many tile manufacturers boast their ranges to be both environmentally friendly and able to withstand extreme temperatures and harsh treatment from the outside elements. Tiles can heat up and cool down according to a rooms temperature, meaning the temperature of the room will need to be controlled in order for the tiles to be comfortable to walk on. This is why many people will often install underfloor heating beneath their tiled floors to combat the coldness during the winter months.
