Building Tip #35: Problems with Exterior Wood

Building Tip #35: Problems with Exterior Wood

Wood on the exterior of your home creates a warm and welcoming feel that has stood throughout the test of time in home design. Repairing wood on home exteriors such as window frames and doors is a daunting task, and if you are not completely certain of what you are doing when making these repairs, you could end up spending a lot of money and time.

Dry Rot:
Dry rot can easily affect many areas of your home, both internally and externally. It has the ability to spread quickly through wood and when there is an outbreak at your home, it will require immediate attention. Dry rot has three telltale signs that you can use to identify the issue: 1. Mycelium growth, which is the presence of a white or grey cotton wool looking substance around your wood. 2. Sporophore, a fungal fruiting body that will spread spores. 3. Dry, cracked, and brittle wood.

Wet Rot:
Wet rot is a generic term which has been given to a multitude of fungal species that affect wood when there is an excess of exposure to moisture. With a number of different species of wet rot, it can be difficult to determine which type is affecting the wood around the exterior of your home. Wet and dry rot require different methods to be removed before it spreads and repairs can be made to the damage with the first step being identification. Wet rot can be identified through the cracking and crumbling of the wood, weakened wooden boards, and a deepening of the colour of the wood. Repairs to wet rot require the affected area to be cut out and removed before the repair is permanently made with a variety of specialized products and expert procedures.

Woodworm:
Woodworm is a collective term for a number of different wood-boring insect species that can damage the wood in your home. As there are a number of different species that can affect and cause severe damage to a building and its structure, it is important to identify which type of insect is causing the damage. If an infestation of insects is present on your property, it is important to call in a pest control company to resolve the issue quickly before the damage to your property becomes too extensive and expensive to repair.
