Building Tip #34: How to Change a Light Fixture DIY Style

Building Tip #34: How to Change a Light Fixture DIY Style

Changing a light fixture or fitting can help you add an element of modern class and style into a room, but can you save some time and money and do it yourself? The answer is yes. Replacing a light fixture is one of the many DIY tasks you can perform solo to help brighten up a room and give it a mini face-lift. Follow these seven steps to safely and quickly install your new light fixture and let your DIY skills shine through.

Step One: Power
Turn off the power at the power box to all the lights in your home. Whenever you perform a DIY project that requires electrical fixtures, make sure to practice safety first and ensure there is no current running through the area you are working on.

Step Two: Remove the Canopy
The canopy of the light fixture is the part that lies flat against the wall and hides the wiring. Many light fixture canopies will have an easy mechanism to help remove it or be secured in place, such as a screw. Carefully remove the canopy and expose the wires beneath.

Step Three: Unwire to Rewire
Follow the now exposed wires and note which wires are coming from your ceiling and which wires are coming from the old light fixture. Carefully disconnect the wires attached to the old fixture from the ones coming from your ceiling or wall.

Step Four: Remove the Old
Once the wires have been carefully disconnected, you are now safe to remove all the hardware of the old light fixture. Many light fixtures will be attached using a bracket and a couple of screws which are easily removed.

Step Five: Install the New
Many light fixtures will come with a bracket specifically designed for that particular type of light fixture. Follow the instructions provided with the new light fixture to ensure you don't miss any important steps and simply install your new light fixture.

Step Six: Connect the Wires
The wires which you disconnected from the previous fixture will have bare or exposed ends to the copper part of the wire. Connect the wires from the fixture with the corresponding colours of the wires from the ceiling by twisting the ends together. Remember that the neutral can either be black or blue.

Step Seven: Secure the New
Once your wires are solidly and properly connected to each other, secure the new light fixture to your ceiling or wall by securing it with the screws provided with the fixture. Make sure it has been properly secured so that it won't fall down after a few days.

Replacing a light fixture isn't rocket science; however, following safety precautions and having all the equipment you will need before you being is vital for a successful project.
